ASC Award-winning cinematographer Martin Ruhe works across film, television, commercials, and music videos to create grand, breathtaking visuals. Notably, Ruhe got his start shooting Anton Corbijn’s feature debut Control, a beautiful black and white biopic about Ian Curtis and Joy Division, set in 1970s England. The film premiered at Cannes Film Festival and received a special mention for the prestigious Camera d’Or. For his work on the film, Ruhe received nominations from the British Independent Film Awards and Camerimage Film Festival.

 

Following this, Ruhe shot Julie Delpy’s haunting historical mystery The Countess, and Daniel Barber’s Harry Brown, named “one of the most gorgeous looking films of the decade” by The Times (UK), before reuniting with Corbijn for The American, starring George Clooney as a suave assassin. From there, Ruhe’s relationship with Clooney flourished, with Ruhe shooting Clooney’s subsequent projects: the Hulu series Catch-22 (also with directors Grant Heslov and Ellen Kuras), The Midnight Sky, a moving sci-fi which was named one of the top ten films by the National Board of Review, The Tender Bar, one of Amazon’s most successful films, and The Boys in the Boat, an inspiring sports biopic set during the Depression. 

 

Much of Ruhe’s work has premiered at Toronto International Film Festival, including David Hare’s Page Eight, which won the ASC Award for Best Cinematography – Motion Picture Television; Daniel Barber’s western The Keeping Room; and Ewan McGregor’s American Pastoral. Alongside the names previously mentioned, Ruhe has collaborated with a plethora of significant directors, including Jaume Collet-Sera on the Warner Bros. action Run All Night, and most recently, James Hawes on the 20th Century Studios thriller The Amateur, starring Rami Malek and Laurence Fishburne.

Besides feature films, Ruhe has also shot television, including the Starz series Counterpart, with Oscar-nominated director Morten Tyldum and Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons, and Paramount+’s The Agency, with Michael Fassbender and Jeffrey Wright. In commercials, Ruhe has worked with Martin Werner, Johnny Hardstaff, Francois Rousselet, Ian Pons Jewell, Sacred Egg, Matt Lambert, Markus Walter, Kathryn Bigelow, Frederic Planchon, Johan Renck, Nick Gordon, Seb Edwards, Siri Bunford, Nacho Gayan, Vincent Haycock, AG Rojas, and many more.
