WORD IS CHEAP

“Rina Yang is a cinematographer making waves in the industry right now. Based in London by way of Japan, her name seems to be attached to more and more projects every week. Stylistically she’s something of a photographic chameleon, with each music video, commercial or film she shoots having a unique visual voice that lends itself perfectly to the subject matter. It’s a subtle style that doesn’t require brash composition, nor does it force you to consider ‘The Cinematographer’ (capital T, capital C). This sort of restraint shows a perfect understanding of what’s necessary to tell a story in line with a Director’s vision, and a great control of the craft.”

Rina is a director of photography based in London. She grew up in a small city in Japan, where she studied still life and portrait painting. She has been selected for the BAFTA Breakthrough 2020, and she is also the first female DOP ever to win a cinematography award at the British Arrows, as well as being nominated for a best cinematographer in fiction at the BAFTA Cymru Awards 19', making history in both commercials and narrative categories.

“Taylor Swift’s music video All Too Well: The Short Film scooped the prestigious MTV Video Music Award (VMA) for Video of the Year at the 2022 ceremony, held on 28 August. The cinematographer behind the video was Rina Yang BSC. Yang, whose work includes Euphoria, Nanny, Sitting in Limbo and Top Boy, joined Swift on stage with actor Dylan O’Brien and producer Saul Germaine to accept the award. Yang was part of the most recent cohort of new British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) members and the award marks her latest industry success. The video also won in the Best Long-Form Video and Best Direction categories.
