Aaron McLisky, an award-winning cinematographer, was born in Brisbane, Australia, and spent his formative years in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he developed a worldview shaped by cultural immersion — an experience that informs his distinctly human approach to visual storytelling. Fluent in Bahasa Indonesian, McLisky brings a rare cross-cultural sensitivity to his work, grounded in naturalism and punctuated by inspired moments of surrealism.

His early career was defined by a bold and distinctive visual style, earning recognition across short film circuits with credits including the award-winning Nursery Rhymes, for which he received the Flickerfest Award for Best Cinematography, and Kilter (dir. Rob Stanton-Cook), which earned him the Gold ACS Award for Best Cinematography in a Short Film.

McLisky's television work quickly established him as one of Australia's most sought-after DPs. He shot the second and third seasons of the critically acclaimed drama Mr. Inbetween (dir. Nash Edgerton) for Blue tongue Films, Jungle Entertainment, Foxtel and FX — a series that received multiple AACTA Award nominations and widespread international praise, with critics frequently singling out his cinematography. Further television credits include the third season of Glitch (dir. Emma Freeman / Matchbox Pictures / ABC / Netflix) and the third season of beloved comedy-drama The Family Law (dir. Ben Chessell / Matchbox Pictures).

His feature film work marks a significant expansion of his portfolio. He served as cinematographer on the horror phenomenon Talk to Me, directed by Danny and Michael Philippou for Causeway Films — a project that announced McLisky's arrival on the international stage. He recently renewed his collaboration with those directors, serving as cinematographer on Bring Her Back for A24, a project that earned him the AACTA Award for Best Cinematography in Film.

Known for character-led storytelling with a taste for absurdity, McLisky excels at finding the emotional truth within a frame, seamlessly blending the naturalistic with the surreal to create a cinematic voice that is unmistakably his own. His range spans intimate television drama and breakout genre cinema alike, cementing his reputation as one of the most compelling cinematographers working today.
